The Gate brings a successful year to a close with the launch of Cineworld’s 4DX four dimensional cinema

The Gate, Newcastle’s premier leisure destination, brings a successful 2017 to a close with the launch of a new 16-screen 4DX cinema from Cineworld on 20th December.

Cineworld has invested £5.5m transforming the 2,635 seat cinema and creating a next generation entertainment space for Newcastle. As the biggest cinema in the city centre, Cineworld at The Gate will offer visitors a truly immersive experience with its high-tech motion seats, and wind, rain, fog and lightening effects, as well as scents accompanying film screenings. This will be the brand’s fifteenth 4DX cinema and the first in the North East region.

The opening of Cineworld follows a successful 12 months for The Gate which has seen its offering enhanced by the launch of Rub Smokehouse and Burger UK, and an extensive refurbishment programme.

Burger UK, which launched in September 2017, is an independent venture and Newcastle is the brand’s first branch outside of its native Scotland. The 3,600 sq ft restaurant offers its signature burgers, shakes and sides, in an energetic and vibrant space.

Rub Smokehouse, the 3,400 sq ft restaurant, is the fourth location for the independent brand. Rub is a collaboration by three friends, with a BBQ menu rooted in the south of the USA and a focus on high-quality meat sourced from local butchers. The Newcastle restaurant opened two years after the brand’s first restaurant was launched.

This year, The Gate has also benefitted from a £3.5m refurbishment project which enhanced the public space and facilities, and improved lighting, wayfinding and signage. The Gate also commissioned a triple height glass and light centrepiece for the main entrance, designed by Newcastle’s Faulkner Browns.

Katherine Armstead, Senior Asset Manager for The Gate, at The Crown Estate said: “Bringing Cineworld 4DX to Newcastle in time for Christmas tops off a fantastic year for The Gate. Newcastle is a vibrant city, with an ever-changing social scene, and I am delighted that we have kept pace with this change. The new brands have added breadth to our leisure and entertainment line-up, complementing the broader offer within the city centre and ensuring we continue to attract significant footfall.”

John Hodgson, Cineworld Newcastle General Manager, said: “We’re really excited to introduce cinema goers to our new 4DX screen on the 20th December. There’s nothing like it and it can only be experienced in the UK at Cineworld. We’re opening the screen with a fantastic line-up of movies such as Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which have been perfectly adapted to suit 4DX. We cannot wait to see customers’ reactions when they try out the completely immersive experience!”
